The French Open champion Stan Wawrinka has joined fellow Grand Slam singles champions Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal in the Aegon Championships line-up at The Queen’s Club, 13-19 June.
Wawrinka, who won the 2014 Australian Open crown as well as last year’s Roland Garros title, will be playing the Aegon Championships for a third successive year. He was a semifinalist in 2014 and went on to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in both of the last two years.
“I am very happy to be playing the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club in June,” said Wawrinka.
“It is one of the longest-running and most respected tournaments on the ATP World Tour, with amazing grass courts and a great atmosphere. Also, many players have gone on to do well at Wimbledon after playing Queen’s, and this happened to me the last two years. I reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals both times – my best results at Wimbledon so far.”
The players he joins in the field, Nadal and Murray, both completed the Queen’s-Wimbledon double, in 2008 and 2013 respectively.
Last year at Wimbledon, Wawrinka was edged out 11-9 in the fifth set against Richard Gasquet, just a few weeks after his stunning victory in Paris.
Tournament Director Stephen Farrow was delighted to add Wawrinka to the player-field at The Queen’s Club, with tickets now on general sale.
“Stan Wawrinka is one of the most spectacular shot-makers in tennis, and the third Grand Slam singles champion to commit to playing at this year’s Aegon Championships.,” said Farrow. “We know that our spectators will be excited at the prospect of seeing Stan, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal in action.”
Tara McGregor-Woodhams, Head of Brand, Sponsorship and Digital Marketing Aegon UK said: “To already have three of the biggest names in tennis signed up to play the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club is a testament to the appeal of the event and the magnificent work put in by the tournament team. We are very much looking forward to the start of the tournament in June.”
