Novak Djokovic Does “It” again… How he does “it” we really can’t imagine. Can he be any more dominant? We guess that this year we will find out. He swept past Andy Murray to claim his sixth Australian Open title, equaling Roy Emerson’s tally.
Murray needed a quick start, but it wasn’t there …. Djokovic was quicker. Swiftly building up a 5-0 lead, Murray finally found the kind of deep hitting that had pushed Djokovic to deuce in his opening service game but found that form a little too late.
The second set was better from the Brit as he regained some momentum with his serving, and pushed hard to make that breakthrough, yet ultimately got nowhere – it’s like playing tennis against a Super Hero or Something…..
Murray was made to toil so hard just to hold his serve – 12 minutes for one game, batting away four break points but any time he made any head-way he was checked right back.
The break at the end of the second set was almost a virtual match-point. The immediate break at the start of the third set even more so, but at this stage Murray started to swing more freely, mix up his shots, mix up the pace, and it really looked as though he could turn the match around, breaking Djokovic back and pushing his way to a tie-break.
But his luck was out – Djokovic was just too good on the night, winning in the tie-break despite squandering two match points.
The fact that Murray made the finals at all after the drama of the collapse of his father-in-law Nigel Sears. His acceptance speech ended with an emotional tribute to his heavily pregnant wife Kim, and admitted that she had encouraged him to play on this year in Australia.
“Regardless of today’s result, it’s been hard. Had I lost in the third or fourth round it still would have been difficult with everything that’s happened. She’s been amazing. Handled everything unbelievably well. I have to thank her for allowing me to play and sort of stay here with everything that was going on. But, yeah, it was tough.”
Djokovic and Murray remain at 1 and 2 respectively on the ATP World Tour rankings when they come out on Monday.
As always many thanks go to the fabulous team in the media office who took great care of us the whole two weeks – the tournament is so well organized and every detail is sorted out every time in a professional fashion.
