Defending champions and fifth seeds Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini were knocked out of the Australian Open on Saturday. French pair Adrian Mannarino and Lucas Pouille won 7-6(5), 6-4 in 86 minutes and they will next play 12th-seeded Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the third round.
2015, Bolelli and Fognini were the first Italians to capture a Grand Slam men’s doubles title since Nicola Pietrangeli and Orlando Sirola at 1959 Roland Garros. The players Bolelli and Fognini beat, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, who would go on to capture the US Open title in September, also fell to Spaniards Pablo Andujar and Pablo Carreno Busta 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-1. Top seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, who finished year-end No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings in 2015 and also lifted the trophy at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, advanced by striking 45 winners past Benjamin Becker and Dominic Thiem in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over one hour and 50 minutes.
“It was another tough match against two singles player that hit the ball really well,” Tecau told ATPWorldTour.com. “Especially Thiem, who was dangerous on the Ad court. We managed to get a break on Becker’s serve in the first set. I lost my serve in the second game of the second set, but there weren’t any more breaks. The third set was pretty intense, with break points back and forth. We managed to break Becker for a 3-1 lead and in the final game, on my serve, it was tough as there were four deuces. They were a tough team in difficult conditions.”
Seventh seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares lost just four of their first service points in a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Jerzy Janowicz for a third-round clash against No. 11 seeds Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt, who edged past Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-4.
“It was a tough win for us today,” Jamie Murray told ATPWorldTour.com. “The conditions weren’t easy, but we had a good spell at the end of the first set and the beginning of the second set that turned the match in our favour.”
Lleyton Hewitt, who is set to retire after the Australian Open, and Sam Groth knocked out eighth seed Henri Kontinen and John Peers 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 early evening. They will now face ninth seeds Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock in the third round.
