TENNIS CANADA NAMES MILOS RAONIC AND EUGENIE BOUCHARD 2015 BIRKS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Vasek Pospisil recipient of two Excellence Awards; Gabriela Dabrowski and Carol Zhao round out winners

Tennis Canada announced Tuesday that Milos Raonic (Thornhill, Ont.) has been named Birks Male Player of the Year for the fifth straight season, while Eugenie Bouchard (Montreal) is the recipient of the Birks Female Player of the Year for a third time. The other high performance Tennis Canada Excellence Awards have also been presented with the Doubles Player of the Year awards given to Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa) and Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver). Pospisil also is the winner of Most Improved Male Player of the Year, with Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, Ont.) receiving the female honour.

Raonic had a strong start to the season, making the final at Brisbane and the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. At Indian Wells in March, he defeated Rafael Nadal for the first time to advance into his fifth Masters 1000 semifinal. He hit a new career-high ranking of world No. 4 in May to become the first Canadian to ever rank Top 4 in singles. His best result in the back half of the season was capturing his seventh ATP World Tour title at St. Petersburg to make it five straight years he has won at least one trophy.

Bouchard’s best performance of the season was in her first tournament, as she made her fourth career Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open. She also made the fourth round at Indian Wells and posted impressive wins to reach the round of 16 at the US Open.

Pospisil is the recipient of two awards for 2015, male doubles player of the year and most improved male player. In doubles, Pospisil followed up his 2014 success by winning his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells with partner Jack Sock. He and Sock also won Beijing and finished as runners-up at the Masters 1000 tournaments in Miami and Paris. Pospisil reached a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 4 in April. On the singles side, Pospisil won three five-setters en route to breaking out at Wimbledon to make his first Slam quarter-final. In his last event of the year, he also made the Valencia semifinals.

The female doubles player of the year is Dabrowski, who remained steady as the top-ranked female doubles player in the country. In March, she won her second career WTA title alongside partner Alicja Rosolska at Monterrey. She also reached the semifinals of Stanford, seven other WTA quarter-finals and the third round of the Australian Open. Finishing the year at No. 48, an improvement from 2014, her career-high is world No. 40 from May of this year.

For her part, most improved female player Zhao made her mark in the NCAA world. She advanced into the Division I singles final and began the 2015-16 season – her junior year – as the No. 1-ranked player in the nation. She also made strides on the pro circuit, making three ITF semifinals at the $50,000 Tevlin Challenger in Toronto and two $25K events in Sumter, South Carolina and Gatineau, Que. She reached a career-high of world No. 247 in July.

Tennis Canada a annoncé mardi que Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) avait été choisi Joueur de l’année Birks pour une cinquième année consécutive, tandis qu’Eugenie Bouchard (Montréal) est nommée Joueuse de l’année Birks pour la troisième fois. Les autres prix d’excellence de Tennis Canada pour l’élite vont à Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa) et Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver), Joueurs de double de l’année. De plus, Pospisil est le lauréat du Prix du Joueur le plus amélioré, alors que Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON) mérite le même honneur chez les femmes.

Raonic a connu un excellent début de saison, accédant à la finale du tournoi de Brisbane avant de participer aux quarts de finale des Internationaux d’Australie. En mars, à Indian Wells, il a vaincu Rafael Nadal pour la première fois afin d’accéder à son cinquième carré d’as du Circuit Masters 1000. Il a atteint un nouveau sommet en se hissant au quatrième rang mondial, en mai, devenant ainsi le premier Canadien à faire partie du Top 4 du simple. Il a signé sa meilleure prestation dans la deuxième moitié de la saison en récoltant son septième titre de l’ATP World Tour, à Saint-Pétersbourg, remportant ainsi au moins un trophée pour une cinquième année consécutive.

La meilleure performance de Bouchard a été réalisée lors de son premier tournoi de l’année alors qu’elle prenait part à son quatrième quart de finale d’un Grand Chelem aux Internationaux d’Australie. Elle a également atteint le quatrième tour à Indian Wells et a signé de magnifiques prestations pour atteindre les huitièmes de finale des Internationaux des États-Unis.

Pospisil est le lauréat de deux prix, soit celui du Joueur de double de l’année et du Joueur le plus amélioré. En double, Pospisil a poursuivi sur sa lancée de 2014 en mettant la main sur son premier titre du Circuit Masters 1000, à Indian Wells, aux côtés de son partenaire Jack Sock. Pospisil et Sock ont également été couronnés champions à Pékin et étaient finalistes aux Masters 1000 de Miami et de Paris. En avril, Pospisil s’est hissé au quatrième rang mondial du double. En simple, Pospisil a remporté trois duels de cinq manches pour atteindre son premier quart de finale d’une épreuve du Grand Chelem, à Wimbledon. À son dernier tournoi de l’année, il a fait partie du carré d’as à Valence.

Joueuse de double de l’année, Dabrowski a consolidé sa place à titre de meilleure joueuse de double du pays. En mars, à Monterrey, elle a conquis le deuxième titre WTA de sa carrière, en équipe avec Alicja Rosolska. Elle a également atteint la demi-finale à Stanford, sept autres quarts de finale de la WTA et le troisième tour des Internationaux d’Australie. Elle a terminé la saison au 48e échelon mondial et occupait le 40e rang en mai dernier.

Zhao a été choisie Joueuse la plus améliorée après avoir fait des vagues sur le circuit de la NCAA. Elle a participé à la finale du simple de la division 1 et a amorcé la saison 2015-2016 en tant que joueuse numéro un des États-Unis. Elle a également connu du succès sur le circuit professionnel, accédant à trois demi-finales de l’ITF, soit au Challenger Tevlin de Toronto, au Challenger de la Caroline du Sud et au Challenger de Gatineau, au Québec. En juillet, elle a atteint un sommet personnel en occupant le 247e rang mondial.
