ORANGE COUNTY BREAKERS RETURNING TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Mylan World TeamTennis season begins July 31

Professional team tennis is back in Orange County in July 2016 as the Orange County Breakers return to play their Mylan World TeamTennis matches in the area.

The Breakers were sold to entrepreneur Lorne Abony after the 2013 Mylan WTT season and moved to Austin, Texas. After two seasons that saw the re-branded Austin Aces advance to the 2015 Mylan WTT Finals, Abony is bringing the team back to its Orange County roots.

“There’s been a great deal of local interest in professional team tennis returning to the area, so I am honored to bring this storied Breakers franchise back to Orange County,” said Abony. “I have always been a believer in the Mylan World TeamTennis product and how it connects a community with professional tennis. We look forward to building a championship caliber team here and offering our fans unprecedented access to some of the top tennis players in the world.”

The Breakers are in final negotiations with an intimate outdoor venue that will allow fans to be close to the fast-paced action. Fans can sign up for information about season tickets by visiting www.BreakersTennis.com. Season tickets are expected to start as low as $210 and all seating will be reserved. The team will also offer VIP tables directly above the baseline of the court that will include full food and beverage service. Individual match tickets will go on sale later this spring. To purchase season tickets or get more information, visit www.BreakersTennis.com or call the Breakers office at (949) 434-4560.

The Breakers previously played in Orange County for 11 seasons from 2003 to 2013, winning the Mylan WTT championship in 2004. Breakers General Manager Allen Hardison noted that the opportunity to play in an outdoor venue was appealing to the team. “We had challenges finding a permanent venue in Austin but then everything fell in place to bring the team back to its Southern California roots in a beautiful facility that we look to announce soon.”

Hardison also noted that all Southern California tennis fans will enjoy the natural rivalry with the San Diego Aviators, who play their matches in Carlsbad.

The 2016 season will be an exciting one with each team playing 12 matches (six home, six away) in just two weeks during this sports-packed Olympic summer. The regular season runs July 31 through August 13 with the top two teams advancing to the Mylan WTT Finals on Saturday, August 27 in the New York City area.

On the court, the team hit their stride in 2015 with the best regular season record before dropping the Mylan WTT Finals to the Washington Kastles. The 2015 squad included league Male MVP Teymur Gabashvili, Female Rookie of the Year Alla Kudryavtseva, world No. 19 Elina Svitolina, Nicole Gibbs and Jarmere Jenkins. Newport Beach resident Rick Leach was named 2015 Mylan WTT Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 12-2 regular season mark. The Breakers can retain the rights to any of the 2015 players who sign up for the 2016 Draft which is set for March 25 in Miami, Fla.

Mylan World TeamTennis is the innovative leader in professional team tennis competition and features many of the world’s best players competing annually for the King Trophy, the league’s championship trophy named after co-founder Billie Jean King. In 2015, Mylan WTT became only the fifth major professional team sports league in the United States to reach the 40th season mark, joining an elite list that includes the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.

In a Mylan WTT match, each team is comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Team matches consist of five sets, with one set each of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The first team to reach five games wins each set and scoring is cumulative throughout the match. For more information on Mylan World TeamTennis, visit www.WTT.com.
