TOP-SEEDED AMY FRAZIER ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS AT

USTA NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Men’s Quarterfinal Pairings Set for Thursday at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

After playing a 16-point game to open her quarterfinal singles match, top-seeded Amy Frazier thought she might have a long day at the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

However, her opponent, unseeded Hiromi Sasano of La Mesa, Calif., suffered a back injury. Despite receiving treatment from the tournament trainer during the changeover, Sasano had to retire from the match, sending Frazier into the semifinals with a 1-0, ret., victory.

“There were a lot of deuces and a lot of good points (in the first game). Obviously we wanted to play. Her back injury seemed serious.” Frazier said following Sasano’s retirement. “I’m happy to be playing again, but there are no happy feelings right now.”

Frazier, a former touring tennis professional who was ranked as high as No. 13 in the world, won 14 USTA Gold Balls as a junior player. When asked if she had any thoughts about winning a gold ball in her first USTA Senior National, she responded, “I really don’t want to think about that. My junior gold and silver balls are probably my most treasured tennis memories. It’s a big deal, but there is a lot of tennis left to be played.”

Awaiting Frazier in Thursday’s semifinals is 2011 singles champion Jennifer Dawson of Carlsbad, Calif., who defeated Zeynep Aynaci of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-1 in a quarterfinal match earlier in the day. Their semifinal encounter is scheduled for 9 a.m.

The other women’s singles semifinal, which will also be played at 9 a.m., features defending champion Dina McBride of Stevenson Ranch, Calif., against unseeded Fanny Gamble of San Rafael, Calif.

Men’s quarterfinal matches are also scheduled for Thursday. At 9 a.m., top-seeded Tony Bujan of Tustin, Calif., is scheduled to face fifth-seeded Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo, Calif. Third-seeded Oren Motevassel of San Jose, Calif., will take on ninth-seeded Jesse Ponwith of Scottsdale, Ariz. At 9:30 a.m., fourth-seeded Marcio Carlsson of Las Vegas will play fifth-seeded Michael Chang of Anaheim, Calif., while unseeded Shibu Lal of Novato, Calif., takes the court against ninth-seeded David Smith of San Francisco.

Matches will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 and Friday, Dec. 4. On Saturday, Dec. 5 and Sunday, Dec. 6, matches are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. (all times are PST). Spectator admission is free and on-site parking is available for a nominal fee.

Also on the tournament agenda is the USTA National Father/Son and Grandfather/Grandson Hard Court Doubles Championships, which begins Friday, Dec. 4 and concludes Sunday, Dec. 6. The Father/Son championship has been held continuously at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club since 1959, and attracts the top father and son tennis teams in the nation. The Grandfather/Grandson Championship is a relatively new competitive division that started at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club just a few years ago.

The Club will be hosting the 127th edition of The Pacific Coast Mens’ Doubles Championships in March 2016, and the USTA National Hard Court Championships for Womens’ 50-90 age groups in May 2016.
