Murray Ends 79-Year Wait For Britain; Jeremy Bates Remembers the Teenager He Picked In 2005; Simon Briggs: Victory Can ‘Give Murray Wings’ For 2016
After Andy Murray helped Britain to a first Davis Cup by BNP Paribas victory since 1936, Jeremy Bates joined The Tennis Podcast to review the final, talk about what it could mean for the future, and to reminisce about the 17-year-old he picked for his first tie against Israel in 2005.
In that tie ten years ago, the scores were level at one rubber apiece when he lined up Murray alongside another debutant in David Sherwood. They faced a seasoned pair in Jonathan Erich and Andy Ram, but immediately Murray’s precocious talent was there for all to see.
“Andy hit a clean backhand winner on return in his first ever point in Davis Cup. That point always stands out in my mind,” said Bates, who was commentating on the final for Eurosport.
“He was unbelievable in that match. You would never have known Andy was just a junior. They played a ‘lights out’ match.”
It was also the first time that the world got to see Murray’s ferocious competitive instinct up close.
“I remember there was a call that went the wrong way and Andy went up to the umpire to debate the point and was standing on the first set of his chair! I thought at one point he was going to haul him out of the chair! But off the court he showed a lot maturity and they won that match 7-6 in the fourth set. It was astonishing to watch,” said Bates.
Also on the show, the Telegraph’s tennis correspondent Simon Briggs talks about the significance of the win for Murray, and says that it can ‘give him wings’ for 2016, in a similar way to how the 2010 Davis Cup victory for Serbia helped Novak Djokovic in 2011.
Murray will play one more night of tennis – Tie Break Tens at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday night – before putting his racquets away for Christmas. He will take on team-mate Kyle Edmund, Tim Henman, David Ferrer and two more players (one a qualifier from Champions Tennis, which starts on Wednesday). Tie Break Tens is a new tennis format featuring quick-fire, super-competitive tennis played exclusively over first-to-ten point tie-breaks. http://www.tiebreaktens.com
