SEEDS AND DRAWS ANNOUNCED FOR UPCOMING USTA

NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

Tournament Scheduled Nov. 30 – Dec. 6 at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Tournament officials have announced the seeds and draws for the United States Tennis Association National 40 Hard Court Tennis Championships, which begin Monday, Nov. 30 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 6 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

 

The top-seed in the men’s singles draw is two-time defending champion Tony Bujan of Tustin, Calif. Bujan, a three-time All-American at Texas Christian University in the early 1990s, is currently an Orange County-based tennis teaching professional.

 

Josh Osswald of Covington, Ky., is seeded second. He represented the U.S. earlier this year as a member of the Tony Trabert Cup team at the International Tennis Federation Young Seniors Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

 

Oren Motevassel of San Jose, Calif., who won the men’s singles title in 2012 and 2011, is seeded third. The 48-year-old Motevassel is a former touring tennis professional and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 161 in the world in 1997.

 

The top-seed in the women’s singles draw is former Women’s Tennis Association star Amy Frazier of Rochester, Mich. The 43-year-old Frazier won eight career WTA singles titles and four doubles championships. She also reached the quarterfinals of the 1992 Australian Open and the 1995 US Open.

 

Defending women’s singles champion Dina McBride of Stevenson Ranch, Calif., is seeded second. McBride, a tennis teaching professional, also won the tournament title in 2012. Jennifer Dawson of Carlsbad, Calif., the 2011 singles champion, is seeded third.

 

“We are thrilled with the depth of this year’s tournament field and it’s going to be a spectacular week of outstanding tennis,” said Tournament Director Bill Kellogg. “We encourage fans to come out to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club and enjoy the matches.”

 

The top three men’s singles seeds and all women’s singles seeds received first-round byes. They will play their first-round matches on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The USTA national tennis tournament, which features the top 40 and over players in the country, also includes men’s and women’s doubles divisions as well as a mixed doubles event.

Matches will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 30 and 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 through Friday, Dec. 4. On Saturday, Dec. 5 and Sunday, Dec. 6, matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. (all times are PST).

 

Also on the tournament agenda is the USTA National Father/Son and Grandfather/Grandson Hard Court Doubles Championships, which begins Friday, Dec. 4 and concludes Sunday, Dec. 6. The Father/Son championship has been held continuously at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club since 1959, and attracts the top father and son tennis teams in the nation. The Grandfather/Grandson Championship is a relatively new competitive division that started at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club just a few years ago.

 

Spectator admission is free and on-site parking is available for a nominal fee.

 

Recently designated one of the Top 100 Tennis Resorts in the world by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s reputation as a top tennis destination started in 1942 when it attracted its first major tournament, the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship. The Club will be hosting the 127th edition of The Pacific Coast Mens’ Doubles Championships in March 2016, and the USTA National Hard Court Championships for Womens’ 50-90 age groups in May 2016.
