Stan Wawrinka started his bid Tuesday to become the first Roland Garros-BNP Paribas Masters titlist in the same season since Andre Agassi in 1999.
The fourth-seeded Wawrinka saved all five break points he faced and hit 13 aces to beat Bernard Tomic 6-3, 7-6(6) in one hour and 32 minutes. Wawrinka saved two set points at 5-6 in the second set, then came back from a 2/5 deficit in the tie-break.
“I wasn’t in a good position, that’s for sure, serving at 2/5,” said Wawrinka. “I played one good point, aggressive, and then he missed an easy forehand and I was back. I was just trying to stay with him… He’s a way better player now. He’s a more physical player, also. He’s fighting way more. He has a better forehand and I think he has a better plan when he’s playing.”
Seeking his fifth title of the year, Wawrinka now plays 15th seed Feliciano Lopez or Viktor Troicki in the third round.
