Upset of No. 3 seed sends Uruguayan into eighth quarter-final of 2015
Pablo Cuevas denied No. 3 seed Bernard Tomic his 40th match win of the year on Wednesday at the Valencia Open with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Cuevas, who is through to his eighth quarter-final (or better) this season — highlighted by the Sao Paulo title (d. Luca Vanni) — next faces fifth seed Benoit Paire or Joao Soua.
Seventh seed Roberto Bautista Agut knocked out fellow Spaniard and 2006-07 titlist Nicolas Almagro 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-4 in the pair’s first meeting. He will next face wild-card teen Andrey Rublev, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over 2011 champion Marcel Granollers.
Vasek Pospisil defeated Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-4 and now challenges Daniel Brands.
American Stevie Johnson, who finished runner-up to David Ferrer in last week’s Vienna final, plays No. 2 seed Feliciano Lopez following a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Martin Klizan.
Spain’s Garcia-Lopez/Marrero Fight Through In Doubles
Spaniards Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and David Marrero teamed up to defeat Tomic/Radek Stepanek 3-6, 7-6(5), 12-10. Also advancing were Julian Knowle/Oliver Marach d.Thomaz Bellucci/Colin Fleming 6-7(11), 6-4, 10-8) and Feliciano Lopez/Max Mirnyi d. Mate Pavic/Michael Venus 6-3, 7-6(5).
