Marin Cilic Repeats in Moscow
Croat tops Bautista Agut in rematch of 2014 Kremlin Cup final
In a rematch of the 2014 final, top seed Marin Cilic rolled past No. 2 seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday for the Kremlin Cup by Bank of Moscow singles title.
Neither Cilic nor Bautista Agut had played in an ATP World Tour final since meeting on this very same Centre Court last year. The Croat won that match by an identical 6-4, 6-4 score. Their rematch marked the first time in the event’s 26-year history that the same two players had competed in consecutive finals.
Cilic, who was limited to one tournament in first three months of the season due to a right shoulder injury, improved to 33-17 with the 90-minute win over the Spaniard, totaling nine aces and winning 75 per cent of his first-serve points. He saved all four break points he faced.
Bautista Agut, who was seeking his first ATP World Tour title since 2014 in ’s-Hertogenbosch (d. Benjamin Becker), fought admirably in the second set. But at 2-2, a big forehand pass would give Cilic his second and final service break of the match and all the momentum he would need.
With the win, Cilic rose from No. 13 to No. 11 in the Emirates ATP Race to London. But David Ferrer’s subsequent title run in Vienna eliminated him from contention for one of two remaining spots at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
