VENUS DIGS DEEP IN WUHAN TO END KONTA RUN
Venus Williams admitted that she had to ‘dig deep’ to fight her way into the semi-finals of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in China.
Williams was 3-5 down in the third set against British qualifier Johanna Konta but came through to win 6-4 3-6 7-5 to win last eight match which enthralled the night session crowd in Wuhan’s new 15,000-seater stadium court.
“Today I was definitely waiting on a few errors which didn’t come from her side,” said Williams, who will face US Open finalist Roberta Vinci on Friday for a place in the final. “I thought she was moving the ball around. I definitely feel like I can rely on my speed when I have to defend. There were definitely some good defense shots today. Maybe not my best day on the court, but that’s when I have to dig deep.”
“I think she played an incredible match and at a very high level,” said Konta afterwards.”I just feel very fortunate that I got to share the court with her. I went on court to win and to do my best. I did give my best. I gave my all today. It just wasn’t enough. Yeah, I lost to a pretty incredible champion.”
Vinci proved too strong for Czech Karolina Pliskova, notching up a 76(2) 6-3 victory. “Of course, I’m really happy also for today. I don’t want to stop, you know. So I play a good game also today, solid game. I’m really, really happy that I’m in semifinal here for the first time. I don’t want to think about if I win this title. Just enjoy my semifinal tomorrow and then we will see the ranking and everything. Step by step.”
Garbine Muguruza will take on Angelique Kerber in Friday’s other semi-final after a comfortable 6-2 6-2 quarter-final win. Muguruza admitted afterwards that she struggled to adjust to competition following her run to the Wimbledon final in July. “You know just after the big result, I didn’t know how I was going to react. It was a little bit difficult to start from zero and, again, another tournament. But I guess it was needed to this happen for me. So, well, just an experience to learn from.”
Kerber, seeded sixth to Muguruza’s fifth, was untroubled against American Coco Vandeweghe, who was stricken with a foot injury which forced her to retire with Kerber losing 6-1 3-1.
