Defending Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open champion Petra Kvitova battled her way past rising star Daria Gavrilova with a hard-fought 6-3 4-6 7-5 in the evening session on Tuesday.

“I don’t know how I won it,” said the two-time Wimbledon champion. “I think these kind of matches are important, to get the confidence to know that if you are not playing well and you are not 100% ready that you can still win. That’s a good sign.”

Top seed Simone Halep staked her claim to the prestigious Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open title with a 6-2 6-1 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to move smoothly through to third round.

Earlier in the day, Venus Williams added another achievement to her already illustrious career in Wuhan on Tuesday when she notched up her 700th career WTA Tour match win with a 6-4, 6-3 second round victory over Germany’s Julia Goerges.

After the match Williams received roses shaped into the number 700 from tournament directors Yi Guoqing and Fabrice Chouquet. She admitted that she had been unaware of the auspicious number. “I didn’t know. I’m glad nobody told me before. I would have been a little bit nervous,” said the American. “Who doesn’t like winning? You know, that never gets old.”

Williams also praised the WTA Premier event in Wuhan, which made its debut on the WTA Tour last year. “Wuhan, China’s on the map now. It has a big tournament, champion players. I never thought I’d be here, but I’m happy to be here. There’s been a lot of pride that’s gone into building this place, to building a tournament that has a wonderful reputation, and also something to build on in the future. So I appreciate everything that’s been done here.”

Caroline Wozniacki exited the tournament after being outlasted in a three-set, three-hour thriller by Anna Karolina Schmeidlova. Wozniacki had treatment on court and afterwards admitted that she had felt unwell. “I started feeling dizzy already in the second set and I just tried to push through it. Yeah, it just wasn’t enough. I tried my best, but it wasn’t good enough,” she said.
