Venus rises against Radwanska in Wuhan

Venus Williams got her Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open campaign off to the perfect start with a 6-1 7-6(4) victory over Agnieszka Radwanska in the evening session.

Williams stemmed a Radwanska fightback in the second set to stop last week’s Toray Pan Pacific Open champion from continuing her winning run from Tokyo.

Earlier in the evening, Maria Sharapova retired from her second round match against Barbora Strycova with a left forearm injury with the scoreline at 6-7(1) 7-6(4) 1-2.

“I was really happy to be back on the court,” said Sharapova, who was playing her first match since Wimbledon after recovering from a leg injury. “I’ve gone through the injury and not playing and missing a Grand Slam, going through the rehab, going through training, this is really the moment that you work for. I enjoyed that feeling again.

“That’s why it’s unfortunate to have to stop from that because you always build and you get the rust out and you hope you grow as the tournament goes along, but not in my case this tournament. Of course, it’s not the best way to end for my fans. But I know that this tournament is here for many years and I will still have the opportunity to come back.”

Williams will be back in action on a busy Tuesday in Wuhan, where former World No.1s Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic, two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka, defending champion Petra Kvitova and top seed Simone Halep will all be on court.
