Champions Tennis – Xavier Malisse Joins Royal Albert Hall Line-Up
The 2002 Wimbledon semi-finalist Xavier Malisse will play Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, 2-6 December after signing up to join Tim Henman, James Blake and Fernando Gonzalez at the iconic venue in London.
Malisse, one of the most talented and stylish players in the game, will be part of an ATP Champions Tour field.
John McEnroe, Henri Leconte, Mats Wilander and Mansour Bahrami will also star in the event, which is staged and owned by IMG, the global leader in sports, fashion, events and media.
‘I have played tennis all over the world during my career but I have never seen a more beautiful venue than the Royal Albert Hall’ said Malisse. ‘Last year was my first year at the tournament, it was a wonderful experience, and I am very much looking forward to returning.’
During his career, Xavier Malisse ( THE X -MAN ) won nine ATP titles, but it was his 2002 run to the Wimbledon semifinals that British crowds will most remember. He defeated Greg Rusedski from two sets to one down in the last 16, then the 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek 9-7 in the fifth set of the quarterfinals before eventually falling to David Nalbandian in the semi-finals. Malisse also won the French Open doubles title in partnership with Olivier Rochus in 2004. In 1999, as a 19-year-old, he helped Belgium to the Davis Cup semifinals, and will come to London a few days after Belgium face Britain in this year’s Davis Cup final.
Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall is the season-finale to the ATP Champions Tour and is played over five days, with two sessions each day – one in the afternoon, one in the evening.
