Entering the US Open, eight different teams had won the last eight majors. That streak will be extended to nine on Saturday.
The eighth-seeded duo of Jamie Murray and John Peers advanced to their second consecutive Grand Slam doubles final, saving one match point in defeat of home hopes Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey. Murray and Peers triumphed 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(7), firing 35 winners, while overcoming 49 from their American opponents. The British-Aussie pair turned aside six of seven break points to prevail after one hour and 55 minutes. They would save a match point at 5-6 in the deciding tie-break, reeling off four of the next five points to emerge victorious.
Murray and Peers have won 10 of their last 11 Grand Slam matches after reaching the Wimbledon final (l. to Rojer/Tecau) in July. Champions on the hard courts of Brisbane and clay of Hamburg this year, they will face the all-French tandem of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in Saturday’s final.
Herbert and Mahut are no strangers to major success this year as well, having streaked to the Australian Open final (l. to Bolelli/Fognini). The 12th seeds have won six consecutive sets in reaching the US Open title match, since saving a match point against Mate Pavic and Michael Venus in the second round.
On Friday, Herbert and Mahut dodged raindrops and an upset bid by Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt, earning a 7-5, 6-2 win in 84 minutes. They are in search of their second team title, with their lone crown coming on the grass of Queen’s Club in June.
Murray and Peers will be seeking revenge after Herbert and Mahut won their lone encounter, 6-3, 7-6(5) in the ‘s-Hertogenbosch semi-finals this year.
