STEVIE JOHNSON AND SAM QUERREY FLYING THE FLAG AT THE US OPEN |

Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey beat Leonardo Mayer and Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-4 in 65 minutes to move into the semi-finals of the US Open on Wednesday.

With no American men remaining in the singles draw, the Johnson/Querrey duo becomes one of the host country’s best hopes for a title this weekend. Both men were eliminated in the opening round of singles, but were able to concentrate on the team event and post their best-ever doubles results at the US Open.

The Americans made the most of their big serves, combining for six aces and not facing a break point. They will take on Jamie Murray and John Peers for a place in the final.

Also advancing were Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt, who upset No. 6 seeds Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea 7-6(2), 6-3 in 82 minutes. The British-Swedish partnership has thrived on American hard courts, winning the title in Winston-Salem the week leading up to the US Open before winning four more matches at Flushing Meadows.

Inglot/Lindstedt saved all five break points faced in the straight-sets win, and will meet No. 12 seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the semi-finals.
