ROGER FEDERER, STAN WAWRINKA SET UP ALL-SWISS SEMIFINAL SHOWDOWN AT THE 2015 U.S. OPEN TENNIS BY RICKY DIMON

Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka will square off in a blockbuster U.S. Open semifinal on Friday after dominating their respective matches on Wednesday evening. Wawrinka crushed Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 in Louis Armstrong Stadium, while Federer blitzed Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in Arthur Ashe.

For Federer, complete and utter dominance is nothing new. The 34-year-old Swiss has not dropped a set through five matches in New York and has not required a tiebreaker against anyone other than John Isner. In fact, nobody other than Isner has even gotten to 5-5 in any set versus Federer (the American did so on all three occasions, two of which resulted in ‘breakers).

Gasquet never came close. Federer broke serve early and often, did not face a single break point the whole way, and sealed the deal in a mere one hour and 27 minutes.

“It’s just nice to see how he’s moving,” Wawrinka said when asked about what he admires most about his countryman’s game. “You think he’s flying on the court.”

Wawrinka has not been as on fire as Federer this summer, but the world No. 5 at least managed to fly through his own quarterfinal match. Anderson, who had upset Andy Murray two days earlier, could managed little resistance and got bounced out of the tournament by Wawrinka in just one hour and 47 minutes.

The reigning French Open champion can expect a much tougher test from Federer. After all, the head-to-head series stands at 16-3 in favor of the 17-time Grand Slam champion. Wawrinka, though, won in straight sets at Roland Garros on his way to the title.

“I hope so,” Federer said when asked if it would take an extraordinary performance in order for someone to beat him this fortnight. “I really do. I believe Stan can bring it…. (I’m) looking forward to playing him, because he definitely is a big test and a big challenge for me. He beat me in straight at the French, so I hope I can do better this time.”

Nobody thinks Federer won’t do better this time. Heck, even Wawrinka probably knows there will be no straight-set victory in his favor this time.

“Everything he’s doing, it seems so easy when we watch him,” the two-time major winner commented.

The only guarantee is that the atmosphere on Friday will be a great one.

“I like to play when there is a big crowd,” Wawrinka continued. “Doesn’t matter if they cheer for me or for the opponent. When we go on court with Roger, he’s the crowd favorite. That’s for sure. Doesn’t matter. It’s normal. Everybody loves Roger. He’s the best player ever. He’s on court and off court a really good guy.”
