Fans gather for a unique honour in Beijing
On 5 September, 814 tennis fans gathered together in the National Tennis Center in Beijing – home of the China Open, an ATP World Tour 500 event – for a tilt at a Guinness World Record. The honour: “Most people bouncing tennis balls on tennis racquets”. They finally succeeded with a total of 767 people.
At 2pm local time, tennis fans wearing uniform yellow T-shirts came to the Diamond Court at the National Tennis Center in the rain, with their tennis racquets and excitement for the opportunity of personally experiencing playing on court. Two-time women’s Grand Slam doubles champion Zheng Jie also came to the scene to teach fans the steady way of bouncing tennis balls and demonstrated a lot.
As the challenge officially started, all the participants counted down the seconds in chorus when bouncing tennis balls: “10 seconds, 9 seconds, 8 seconds …”. When time was up, the Certification Officer began to confirm the number and finally announced that 767 people succeeded, which set the new world record of “The most people bouncing tennis balls on tennis racquets”. After that, Zheng excitedly took a selfie with fans to commemorate the record.
This year, the China Open will attract a star-studded lineup including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic.
