World No. 3 Andy Murray is expecting a tough match against his US Open third round opponent, Thomaz Bellucci, who won the pair’s only previous meeting in 2011.
“He’s played well this year, good serve, plays predominantly from the back of the court but he’s an aggressive player,” said Murray. “He likes to try and dictate the points from the back…so I expect a tough match and one that I’ll need to play very well to win.”
The 2012 champion has a 11-0 winning record against left-handers this season which bodes well for chances against the 27-year-old Bellucci who, seeded 30th, is through to the final 32 at Flushing Meadows for the first time in eight starts.
Murray was questioned about why he wears Adidas shoes, despite being midway through a multi-year contract with Under Armour.
“As a professional athlete, you obviously have to be very careful when you make changes to your racquets and to your footwear,” explained Murray, who said he began testing Under Armour shoes in March, then wore them during the grass court season and at Wimbledon, where he lost in the semi-finals to Roger Federer.
“[I] did some more testing on the hard court shoes in the build-up here, they just weren’t quite right,” said the Scot, adding that he’ll be in Under Armour shoes by year end. “You can’t take risks with those things because if you have an issue there, get blisters or twist an ankle or whatever, that can cost you. It’s different if it’s a T-shirt or shorts. The shoes and the racquets are obviously extremely important.”
The 28-year-old Murray added that comebacks from two-set deficits and winning matches while not playing his best can be a confidence-booster. “You feel a little bit like you’re fortunate to still be in the event and you’re a bit more maybe relaxed going into the next matches,” said Murray. “I’ve come through many tough matches in my career, and I think that’s why when you are behind like that in the scoreline, when you’ve done it in the past, you have the belief that you can come through and do it again.”
