At the US Open on Wednesday, top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan fell to countrymen Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3. It was only their second loss in the first round of a major since 2001 and marks the first season since 2004 that the Bryans haven’t won at least one Grand Slam title.
“We’ve played them 15 times and maybe won twice,” said Querrey. “They’ve been tricky every time and we’re just happy to hold on in the end.”
Second seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo were upset by Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes. Dodig and Melo, the reigning Roland Garros champions, won just one of 10 break points
But it wasn’t all bad for seeded teams.
Eighth seeds Jamie Murray and John Peers began their US Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over American wild cards Bjorn Fratangelo and Dennis Novikov. The British-Australian team, who reached their first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, needed just 59 minutes to claim the victory. They didn’t face a break point.
