Pick of the Day 3 match-ups
Madison Keys kicks off the day’s action on Ashe and buoyed by her first round win, we think she should handle Tereza Smitkova. The Czech made it to the quarter-final of the season opener in Shenzhen losing to Petra Kvitova, but since then hasn’t managed back to back wins on the main tour, although she’s enjoyed a bit of ITF success this year.
Keys in 2.
Serena and Venus Williams will grace Ashe, with Serena rounding off the day’s play and Venus start off the night session. Williams the younger is looking in fine fettle while Williams Major had a bit of a battle on her hands in her first round, but it was good to see her out there again after being hit with a virus in Cincinnati.
Serena in 2, Venus in 2.
We have another all-American affair as the ever popular Bethanie Mattek-Sands takes on Coco Vandeweghe who stunned Sloane Stephens. This is a tough one to call, and providing Vandeweghe eschews the on-court interview, we give her an edge over the fan favourite, but both will enjoy the crowd’s support for sure
Vandeweghe in 3.
Genie Bouchard has slowly turned around her woeful season, and with or without the Jimmy Connors in her corner, she has a chance to notch up another round against Polona Hercog. However the Slovakian did bounce out Zarina Diyas, one of the WTA’s Rising Stars so she can expect a fight. Still, on paper she should have this.
Bouchard in 2.

Today’s Tidbits
All change on the coaching front– Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza parted ways with her long-time coach Alejo Mancisidor and is putting her faith, during the US Open, in Conchita Martinez. Halep has also been on the coaching merry-go-round, after splitting with Victor Ionita, she is now under the advice of Darren Cahill. Wozniacki has been in and out of the coaching pool, but Papa Piotr still knows best.
Who’d be a French Open semi-finalist in the first round here? Well if you’re Serena you’re home and dry but today saw Lucie Safarova and Timea Bacsinszky join Ana Ivanovic on the seed-losing-side-lines.
Halep will be hoping that being seeded No. 2 for the second time won’t end the same way – she was upset in the third round of last year’s US Open by qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.
Night-matcher Petra Kvitova has yet to reach the semi-final in New York, having win Wimbledon twice and reached the semi-finals at the 2012 Australian Open and Roland Garros. She has not matched her seeding at the Slams this year – is tonight where that all starts to change?
