All-American tandem edge wild cards
Christian Harrison teamed up with brother Ryan to defeat Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim 6-2, 6-4 in 59 minutes in the Winston Salem first round on Wednesday. It was Christian’s first ATP World Tour match since Washington 2013. The 21-year-old American had been sidelined due to double hip surgery.
The Harrisons saved both break points faced and went three-for-eight on break chances on their opponents’ serve. In the quarter-finals, they will face fourth seeds Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt, who defeated Teimuraz Gabashvili and Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-2.
Second seeds Treat Huey and David Marrero were upset by the Brazilian-Kiwi tandem of Andre Sa and Artem Sitak 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 10-6 in the first round. Huey and Marrero saved a match point in the second set tie-break, but would eventually succumb after one hour and 46 minutes. They will face Sam Groth and Chris Guccione in the quarter-finals.
Third seeds Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky avoided the upset bug, streaking past Pablo Andujar and Marcelo Demoliner 6-3, 6-3 in just 47 minutes. They await Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in the quarter-finals after the Polish-Pakistani duo edged Jonathan Marray and Michael Venus 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will face top seeds Daniel Nestor and Lukasz Kubot in the quarter-finals. The Spaniards downed American Nicholas Monroe and Frenchman Benoit Paire 1-6, 7-6(2), 10-7.
