Rafael Nadal joined forces with fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger on Tuesday in New York City, celebrating the launch of his new global brand ambassadorship.
Flanked by celebrities including Martha Stewart, comedian Jane Lynch and model Hannah Davis, Nadal introduced his new line of Tommy Hilfiger underwear and new fragrance TH Bold at the event held in Bryant Park. A member of the ATP Business Advisory Board, Hilfiger is an avid tennis fan.
When the topic shifted from briefs and colognes to his current form on the court, Nadal admits that while his game is headed in the right direction, he does not consider himself a favourite for the US Open crown.
“It’s obvious that I will be arrogant today saying I will win the US Open after the year I have had, but I will say I feel better than most of the season,” Nadal said. “We’ll see if it’s enough. I enjoy the fact that I am here. Last year I couldn’t say that. In terms of tennis and mentality, I am close to be where I want to be.
“My confidence is fine. I think I’ve been playing better than what the results say the past couple of tournaments. I’m doing things well. It’s always the same after losing some matches during the year to find the momentum again. I’m in this process and I know I am better than months ago.”
Nadal also discussed his aspirations of returning to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals following a one-year absence, due to an appendectomy. He believes that qualification will come with the right mentality and positive results in the coming months.
“I want to play well. If I play well I’m going to be playing in the [Barclays ATP] World Tour Finals and I am going to be competing. I know where I am and what’s my real level when I am well and my real level is higher than what I’ve been doing this season. The World Tour Finals is a goal and it will be good news if I finally qualify. I’m going to fight for it, but my real goal is to compete with the right mentality again, the right confidence and the right level of tennis.”
The two-time champion (2010, ’13) is seeded eighth as the US Open is set to get underway on Monday.
