It’s only August, but 2015 has already been a year to remember for World No. 6 Tomas Berdych.
A coaching overhaul at the start of the year saw the Czech begin working with Dani Vallverdu, producing his best-ever start to the season. But success hasn’t been limited to the tennis court for the 29-year-old Berdych, who married Ester Satorova on 16 July.
And Berdych is hoping the best could be yet to come, with the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, just around the corner.
“I still definitely feel I’m improving as a player, whether it’s in terms of fitness or tennis,” Berdych told ATPWorldTour.com. “I’ve been able to improve everything in both areas and that’s important to me, so I hope that’s going to bring that big title.”
Playing in his first match back since Wimbledon, Berdych was upset by Donald Young in his Rogers Cup opener last week in Montreal. But the right-hander has found his groove this week at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, cruising past Tommy Robredo for the loss of just one game on Thursday to set a quarter-final clash with Alexandr Dolgopolov at the seventh ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the season.
“It wasn’t my best in Montreal, but it’s good to be a bit patient because the work I’ve done in the summer in preparation was really hard and there was a lot of it,” said Berdych. “So you need a little time to settle down and everything is in place right now. I’m feeling good, really enjoying the time on court and looking forward to playing more and more matches.”
After announcing their engagement during a photo call in Melbourne at the start of the year, Berdych and model Satorova held their wedding in Monte-Carlo after Wimbledon. It was “beyond perfect” Berdych said.
“Married life has been very good! We had an amazing time and I think that’s how it should be. Now it’s back to work and what I know. I think it’s just another step in my life and now let’s keep focusing and looking forward.
“The day was even beyond perfect. Everything worked as if you’d clicked your fingers. It was really well made and well organised.”
