Bulgarian surges into Cincy third round

Grigor Dimitrov is one match win from reaching his third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final of the year, following a 7-6(4), 7-6(5) dismissal of Vasek Pospisil on Tuesday in Cincinnati.

No. 16 seed Dimitrov will face either third seed Andy Murray or wild card Mardy Fish in the Western & Southern Open third round. He fired 10 aces and claimed 84 per cent of first serve points to prevail after one hour and 47 minutes.

Tomas Berdych was in a hurry in beating Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 6-3 in 81 minutes. He saved six of seven break points faced to open his 11th Cincinnati campaign.

Feliciano Lopez notched his 31st Top 10 win and second of the year in turning aside ninth seed Milos Raonic 7-6(4), 6-4. Each of the Spaniard’s last five victories over Top 10 opposition have come at the Masters 1000 level, including victory over Kei Nishikori in Indian Wells earlier this year. Raonic was denied his 200th match win on the ATP World Tour.

Lopez, who is looking to reach the third round for just the second time in his 13th trip to Cincinnati, faces Andreas Seppi next. It will be their first meeting in seven years, with Seppi owning a 3-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head advantage.

Seventh seed Marin Cilic also joined Dimitrov in the third round after downing Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-2, hitting 22 winners and six aces. A quarter-finalist in 2012, Cilic will square off against either Richard Gasquet or Thanasi Kokkinakis next.

In other action, qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolovmaintained his strong run of form in blastingBernard Tomic 6-4, 6-1 for his first match win in Cincinnati. The Ukrainian entered the week having fallen in the first round in four previous appearances. He saved all three break points faced while converting on four of five of his own.

Ivo Karlovic launched 14 aces in downing Martin Klizan 6-3, 7-6(2), capturing his 30th match win of the year. It marks just the fourth time (2007-08, ’14) he has notched 30 victories in his career.
