Stan Wawrinka and Leander Paes stormed back to beat Kevin Anderson and Jeremy Chardy 1-6, 6-1, 10-6 in Monday’s Western & Southern Open first round.
Singles World No. 5 Wawrinka and former doubles World No. 1 Paes are contesting their second tournament together, having reached the quarter-finals at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Paris last October. They set a second-round clash against eighth seeds Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock, who they beat 6-1, 6-4 in Paris.
Meanwhile, Tomas Berdych and Mardy Fish fell to Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram 7-6(5), 6-4 in one hour and 24 minutes. The South African-American tandem will face sixth seeds Marcin Matkowski and Nenad Zimonjic in the second round.
It was likely the last doubles match of Fish’s career. The American, who will retire following the US Open, owns eight titles.
“I don’t think so,” Fish said about potentially playing doubles in New York. “If I were to win a match, on my day off I wouldn’t want to play doubles. That’s the only thing.
“I would love to play. But three out of five? Just singles probably.”
