Every Session Sets New High – Each of the first seven sessions of the 2015 tournament have set the record attendance mark for that respective session.

SHARAPOVA, VENUS WILLIAMS WITHDRAW

Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams both withdrew from the Western & Southern Open. Sharapova, the 2011 tournament champion, cited a right leg injury while Williams was suffering from a viral illness.

Sharapova said, “Yeah, very unfortunate. I mean, the tournament has been great to me and the tournament director and all the fans, and I definitely wish I could step out there. But under the circumstances and the dateline to the US Open just, wouldn’t be a smart move.”

Williams said, “It’s pretty rare that I withdraw or retire, so I just wasn’t able to get out there tonight. Every match you have to be at your best, you know, to win. Just couldn’t be at my best today.”

Ana Ivanovic advanced to the third round as a result of Venus’ walkover. Ivanovic said, “It’s always hard to hear of a withdrawal. I really hope Venus feels better soon. It would have been a tough match for both of us. I hope she can get well fast.”

“Sloane has been in great form and recently won the tournament in Washington – she’s a very tough opponent. Meanwhile Barthel has a great serve and we’ve had some tough matches in the past. So it will be a battle. I’m really enjoying being here in Cincinnati, I have some great memories here. It’s hot, it’s humid – but I still love the competition!”

About the Western & Southern Open

The Western & Southern Open is held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, 20 miles north of Cincinnati in Mason, Ohio. The tournament is one of the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 events on the men’s tour and a Premier 5 event for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), making it one of only five events in the world outside of the grand slams with events of that caliber occurring during the same week at the same venue. More than 67 million people watch the event worldwide. The tournament is also one of the last stops on the Emirates Airline US Open Series before the US Open in New York. Since 1974, the tournament has contributed more than $9 million directly to its beneficiaries: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the Barrett Cancer Center and Tennis for City Youth.

About the Emirates Airline US Open Series

Now in its 12th season, the Emirates Airline US Open Series continues to serve as a true regular season of hard court tennis, linking seven summer tournaments to the US Open. In 2014, Serena Williams won the US Open and Emirates Airline US Open Series women’s title for the second consecutive year, earning a record tennis paycheck of $4 million. Rafael Nadal (2013), Roger Federer (2007) and Kim Clijsters (2005) also accomplished the feat of winning the Emirates Airline US Open Series and US Open singles title within the same year.
