Fresh from guiding Great Britain to the Davis Cup semi-finals last month, brothers Andy and Jamie Murray will share the court in a different capacity for the first time in Montreal – as opponents.
Having secured the pivotal doubles rubber over Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nicolas Mahut at Queen’s Club in July, the Scots will play their first ATP World Tour-level match against each other in the second round of the men’s doubles at the Rogers Cup.
Teaming with India’s Leander Paes, Andy beat Jeremy Chardy and Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-1 to book the second-round date with Jamie and John Peers.
“I’ve never played my brother since we became professionals,” Andy said. “We obviously played a lot against each other in juniors, in a lot of local competitions or competitions around Great Britain, but yeah we haven’t played each other for a very long time.
“So it’ll be nice in some ways to do that but also it’s not easy. Serena and Venus [Williams] have obviously done it playing for Grand Slams and stuff and I can’t imagine how difficult that is.”
Seeded seventh, Jamie and Peers recently claimed the German Open crown in Hamburg and reached the men’s doubles final at Wimbledon.
