Rafael Nadal, the 2013 Rogers Cup singles champion, made a winning return to Montreal as he teamed up with compatriot Fernando Verdasco to beat Tomas Berdych and Jack Sock 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 on Monday.

The Spaniards needed one break of serve and 29 minutes to win the opening set. Undeterred, Berdych and Sock saved five break points in the second set before edging Nadal and Verdasco to force a Match Tie-break.

Nadal and Verdasco’s next opponents will be eighth seeds Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who took home the doubles title at Queen’s in June.

Novak Djokovic partnered fellow Serb Janko Tipsarevic to a 6-4, 6-3 win against Andreas Seppi and Viktor Troicki in 63 minutes. The match was dominated by the return of serve, as the teams exchanged 13 break points in the first set and six in the second. Next up for the Serbs are fourth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea.

Andy Murray set up a doubles showdown against his older brother, Jamie Murray, after joining forces with Leander Paes to dismiss Kevin Anderson and Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-1. They faced one break point to their opponents’ nine in the 61-minute match.

Jamie Murray and John Peers, the No. 7 seeds this week, recently won the Hamburg title and were runners-up at Wimbledon.
