Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated third seed Fabio Fognini 7-6(0), 6-4 on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel.
The sixth-seeded German capitalised on four of his six break point chances to reach the last four after 98 minutes, improving his FedEx ATP Head2Head record against the Italian to 3-1.
The 31-year-old Kohlschreiber has reached the quarter-finals or better five times this season. He reached his 12th ATP World Tour final at the end of April in Munich (l. to Murray).
Kohlschreiber will next face Dominic Thiem.
The top seed advanced after Albert Montanes retired due to a left ankle injury when the Austrian was up 7-6(3), 3-2.
By reaching the semi-finals, Thiem extended his win streak to 10 matches.
Nicolas Almagro also advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dusan Lajovic.
In the first meeting between the two, the Spaniard saved all five break points he faced in the 72-minute match. Almagro, a 12-time ATP World Tour titlist, will next face qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu, a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 winner over Federico Delbonis.
