Fabio Fognini recorded his 20th clay-court match win of the season Wednesday to book a spot in the Generali Open quarter-finals. The third seed, competing in Kitzbuhel for the third time, saved six of seven break points to knock out 21-year-old wild card Dennis Novak 6-1, 6-2 in just 57 minutes. Fognini will next challenge sixth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, who swept past Santiago Giraldo 6-0, 6-2 in 59 minutes.
Fourth seed Martin Klizan was not so fortunate. Despite striking eight aces, experienced qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu, now 33, won 6-3, 7-5. He now faces Federico Delbonis, a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Robin Haase, who beat Kohlschreiber for the 2012 title.
Later today, top seed Dominic Thiem – a winner of three ATP World Tour titles and on the brink of breaking into the Top 20 in the Emirates ATP Rankings – meets his Austrian compatriot, Andreas Haider-Maurer. Meanwhile, 12-time clay-court titlist Nicolas Almagro plays 2008 runner-up Jurgen Melzer.
