Americans Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Colin Fleming of Great Britain and Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in the final of the BB&T Atlanta Open 4-6, 7-6(2), 10-4 on Sunday. With the win, the Bryans secured their 107th title and fourth of the year (Delray Beach, Miami and Monte-Carlo). They will take home 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $32,370. Fleming and Muller will share 150 points and $17,020.
The unseeded Fleming/Muller pairing, who were appearing in their first ATP World Tour final together, took the early lead, breaking the Bryans twice en route to a 5-2 lead. The Americans saved four set points and got one break back, but Fleming/Muller closed the first set out 6-4 in 30 minutes.
In the second set, Fleming and Muller were one point away from serving for the championship at 5-5, 40/40 on the Bryans’ serve, but the top seeds won the deciding point and held on to force a tie-break, winning it seven points to two.
The Bryans hit their strides in the Match Tie-break, racing out to a 4-1 lead and then sweeping the final four points of the match to claim their first title in Atlanta (9-5 win-loss record). Atlanta becomes the 31st different city in which the World No. 1 Bryans have won an ATP World Tour event. It was the 13th time that Bob and Mike Bryan have come out on top in the final of an American tournament.
“Bob and I have really enjoyed playing this fantastic event and couldn’t be more thrilled to come away with the trophy. Today’s match was a hard fought battle against a really tough team and it came down to the wire. Luckily we were able to play some great tennis toward the end to swing the match in our favor. The Atlanta fans have been awesome all week and helped push us over the line,” said Mike Bryan.
