Umag champ drives eight hours to get to next tournament in Gstaad.
There was little time for celebration for Dominic Thiem after winning his second ATP World Tour title at the Konzum Croatia Open Umag on Sunday evening.
Indeed, after dinner with his family and friends on Sunday night, the 21-year-old Austrian was faced with an eight-hour road trip on Monday from Croatia to Switzerland to drive to his next tournament, the Swiss Open Gstaad, some 785 km away.
Thiem is the third seed at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this week. After a first-round bye, Thiem will face Federico Delbonis for a place in the quarter-finals on his second appearance in Gstaad.
After beating Joao Sousa in the Umag final Sunday, Thiem is this week up to a career-high World No. 24 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. There are now five players born in the 1990s ranked in the Top 25 as Thiem joined Milos Raonic (No. 8), David Goffin (No. 14), Grigor Dimitrov (No. 16) and Bogota champion Bernard Tomic (No. 25).
