Isner, Pospisil, and Sock headline BB&T Atlanta Open
By Ricky Dimon
Two-time defending champion John Isner is the No. 1 seed this week at the BB&T Atlanta Open as he aims to make it a three-peat. Isner has a first-round bye along with fellow top-four seeds Vasek Pospisil, Jack Sock, and Adrian Mannarino.
The 6’10” American will contest his opening match against either Christopher Eubanks or Radek Stepanek. Eubanks is rising sophomore at nearby Georgia Tech and plays No. 1 singles for the men’s team. Isner’s nearest seed is compatriot Steve Johnson, who will begin his week against Lukas Lacko.
Pospisil, a recent Wimbledon quarterfinalist, awaits either Yen-Hsun Lu or Malek Jaziri. Potential quarterfinal opponents for the Canadian are Marcos Baghdatis, Sam Groth, and wild card Frances Tiafoe.
An possible second-round showdown that would certainly intrigue the heat-braving spectators is Mannarino vs. Alexandr Dolgopolov. Mannarino is coming off a runner-up finish in Bogota to Bernard Tomic. Dolgopolov is one of the most eclectic–and also talented–players on tour but is still unseeded as he looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2014 campaign.
Arguably the most significant storyline of this event is the participation of Mardy Fish. The 33-year-old American has not played since Indian Wells and will retire later this summer after playing Atlanta, Cincinnati, and the U.S. Open. Fish is set for a first-rounder against 2014 runner-up Dudi Sela.
Perhaps even more notable is Fish’s doubles situation. He is teaming up with none other than Andy Roddick, who is temporarily coming out of retirement after calling it quits at the 2012 U.S. Open. Fish and Roddick will face Lu and Jonathan Marray in the opening round.
Speaking of doubles, the draw is loaded. Bob and Mike Bryan lead the way as the No. 1 team in the world and the top seeds. Pospisil and Sock, the defending champions who also triumphed at Wimbledon last year, are seeded second.
Other doubles entrants include Baghdatis, Groth, Johnson, Mannarino, Gilles Muller, and Atlanta’s own Donald Young.
