BELGIUM BEATS THE CANADIANS IN DAVIS CUP TENNIS

BELGIUM DEFEATS CANADA 3-0 IN DAVIS CUP BY BNP PARIBAS WORLD GROUP QUARTER-FINALS

Bemelmans and Coppejans defeat Nestor and Shamasdin to clinch the tie

 

Middelkerke (Ostend), July 18, 2015 – The Canadian Davis Cup team was defeated by Belgium 3-0 in their Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarter-final tie on Saturday after the hosts clinched the third and final point needed for victory in the doubles rubber. The pairing of Daniel Nestor (Toronto) and Adil Shamasdin (Toronto) were unable to keep Canada’s hopes alive, falling 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans and Kimmer Coppejans. The tie is being played on an outdoor clay court at the Sportpark Krokodiel in Middelkerke (Ostend), Belgium.

 

Entering the match down 2-0 to the home team after opening day singles losses by Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, Ontario) and Filip Peliwo (Vancouver), Nestor and Shamasdin were in a must-win situation to keep Canada alive in the best-of-five tie.

 

This was the one match of the weekend where Canada was favoured on paper with Nestor ranked No. 24 in the world in doubles and Shamasdin at No. 65. Bemelmans is the highest ranked doubles player for Belgium at No. 189 while Coppejans sits at No. 921. In singles, their respective rankings are No. 95 and No. 102.

 

The two teams were each comprised of one veteran and one Davis Cup rookie as Shamasdin and Coppejans were both making their debuts. It was there that both teams found openings in the first set as Coppejans and Shamasdin were both broken early. However, after a second break on the Canadian’s serve, the young Belgian showed his mettle by serving out the first set to give his team the lead. Three consecutive breaks late in the second set gave Nestor the chance to serve it out and even the match, which he did after saving one break point.

 

After that, every time the Canadians got an advantage or felt momentum shift their way, the Belgians were quick to counter and even the score, not allowing their opponents to find a rhythm in their first Davis Cup match as a pair. With the Belgians up a break in the third and Bemelmans serving to close it, the Canadians broke serve only to give it right back the next game thanks to clutch returning from both Belgian players. Nestor double faulted on break point serving at 2-1 in the fourth set and that was the final advantage the Belgians needed to seal up their spot in the semifinals.

 

“We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities,” said Shamasdin. “We had our chances. Their level got better as the match went on and they were feeding off the crowd’s energy. We couldn’t get enough balls in play. Our standard is better than that and we didn’t come with the goods today.”

 

Nestor was playing in his 49th Davis Cup tie for Canada, adding to his record of most ties played by a Canadian.

 

“Obviously they played well,” said Nestor. “I think the big difference today was returns. They hit some really quality returns. We’d win points if we hit great serves but if we didn’t start the point strong their return game was better than ours. They hit some lucky shots too. But overall that was the difference.”

Canada is now out of contention for the 2015 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas title while Belgium has advanced to the semifinals and will play Argentina at home in September.

 

“Of course it’s disappointing as we felt we had a chance, but I’m proud of what we did this year,” said team captain Martin Laurendeau. “We still made quarter-finals for just the second time in history. That is nothing to be ashamed of. We just got beat by a better team this weekend. I feel proud of the guys that stepped in due to the injuries to our top players. It’s not an easy way to make your Davis Cup debut in such a big moment and in conditions that aren’t favourable to us. I’m just really proud of the way the whole team prepared and gave it everything they had.”

 

The two reverse singles matches scheduled for Sunday, July 19 will still be played but as best-of-three set matches instead of best-of-five. The current line-up has world No. 14 David Goffin up against Dancevic in the first match followed by Peliwo versus Steve Darcis. The captains are able make player substitutions up to one hour prior to the start of the match. Play will resume at 1 p.m. local time.

Following Sunday’s matches, Canada’s focus will turn to the 2016 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas competition where they will be playing in the World Group for the fifth consecutive year. Their first round opponent will be determined at the official draw which will be held in September after the World Group play-off ties have been concluded.

LA BELGIQUE BLANCHIT LE CANADA 3-0 EN QUART DE FINALE DU GROUPE MONDIAL DE LA COUPE DAVIS PAR BNP PARIBAS

Bemelmans et Coppejans ont raison de Nestor et de Shamasdin pour marquer le point gagnant

 

L’équipe canadienne de la Coupe Davis a subi un revers de 3-0 aux mains de la Belgique en quart de finale du Groupe mondial de la Coupe Davis par BNP Paribas, samedi, après que les Belges aient signé le point de la victoire en double. En effet, Daniel Nestor (Toronto) et Adil Shamasdin (Toronto) n’ont pas réussi à garder le Canada dans la course, s’inclinant 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 et 6-3 face à Ruben Bemelmans et à Kimmer Coppejans. La rencontre se déroule sur un terrain extérieur de terre battue au Sportpark Krokodiel, à Middelkerke (Ostende), en Belgique.

 

Mené 2-0 après les défaites de vendredi de Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, Ontario) et de Filip Peliwo (Vancouver) en simple, le Canada se devait de remporter le double pour éviter l’élimination dans cette rencontre disputée au meilleur de cinq matchs.

 

C’est d’ailleurs le seul duel du week-end où les Canadiens étaient favoris sur papier en vertu du 24e rang mondial de Nestor et du 65e de Shamasdin, comparativement au 189e échelon de Bemelmans et du 921e de Coppejans, en double.

 

Les deux équipes étaient formées d’un vétéran et d’une recrue, Shamasdin et Coppejans participant tous les deux à leur première rencontre de la Coupe Davis. Ce sont d’ailleurs eux qui ont été le point faible de leur équipe respective en début de match, principalement au service. Cependant, après avoir ravi le service des Canadiens pour une deuxième fois dans la première manche, le jeune Belge a fait preuve d’aplomb en servant pour la manche pour prendre les devants. Trois bris consécutifs vers la fin du deuxième acte ont permis à Nestor de servir pour niveler la marque.

Par la suite, chaque fois que les Canadiens avaient l’avantage, les Belges revenaient à la charge, empêchant leurs adversaires de trouver leur rythme. Alors que les Belges menaient par un bris à la troisième manche, les Canadiens sont parvenus à ravir le service de Bemelmans, mais ont concédé le leur tout de suite après, ne pouvant résister aux magnifiques retours des Belges. À la quatrième manche, Nestor a commis une double faute alors qu’il faisait face à une balle de bris à 1-2 et c’est tout ce dont les Belges avaient besoin pour s’envoler avec le gain.

 

« Nous n’avons pas su profiter de nos chances », mentionnait Shamasdin. « Nous avons eu nos chances, mais ils ont rehaussé leur niveau de jeu au cours du match et se nourrissaient de l’énergie de la foule. Nous n’avons pas mis assez de balles en jeu. Nous sommes meilleurs que cela, mais nous n’avons pas livré la marchandise aujourd’hui. »

 

Nestor participait à sa 49e rencontre de la Coupe Davis, lui qui détient le record de l’équipe pour le plus grand nombre de rencontres disputées.

 

« Ils ont évidemment bien joué », commentait Nestor. « Je crois que la différence était dans les retours. Ils ont produit des retours de qualité. Nous marquions des points lorsque nos services étaient aussi de très haute qualité, sinon, leur jeu en retour était meilleur que le nôtre. Ils ont également été chanceux sur certains coups, mais en général, ce sont les retours qui ont fait la différence. »

 

Le Canada est maintenant éliminé de la compétition, alors que la Belgique accède à la demi-finale et affrontera l’Argentine, en septembre.

 

« Il est certain que c’est très décevant, mais je suis fier de ce que nous avons accompli cette année », confiait le capitaine Martin Laurendeau. « Nous avons atteint les quarts de finale pour la deuxième fois de notre histoire et il ne fait pas avoir honte de cela. Nous avons simplement perdu contre une meilleure équipe. Je suis fier des joueurs qui ont répondu à l’appel pour remplacer leurs coéquipiers blessés. Faire ses débuts en Coupe Davis dans un moment aussi important n’est jamais facile, mais je suis vraiment fier de la façon dont l’équipe s’est préparée et s’est battue. »

 

Les deux derniers duels de simple seront présentés dimanche, à 13 h, heure locale, mais seront disputés au meilleur de trois manches. Il est prévu que David Goffin (14e) affronte Dancevic, puis que Peliwo croise le fer avec Steve Darcis. Toutefois, les capitaines ont jusqu’à une heure avant les matchs pour effectuer des changements.
