The feud between Bernard Tomic–plus his family–and Tennis Australia has reached new heights in recent weeks.

During Wimbledon earlier this month, Tomic blasted the federation for giving him improper treatment. After losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the third round, the 22-year-old held nothing back for Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley.

“He’s the reason the last few years, it’s been up and down for me,” Tomic said. “There has been (a) lack of support towards me. There has been no respect I think towards me. It’s been difficult. (I’ve) been (a) good player the last three (or) four years coming up, and people (are) expecting a lot from you. All of a sudden, things started changing after I had that (hip) surgery (early in 2014).

“Whatever they invested in me, they got in return 10 (or) 20 times more. That’s 100 percent certain. Now all of a sudden, they are neglecting me for some reason. They are not supporting me; not respecting me.”

While that may be debatable, Tennis Australia without question disrespected Tomic in the latest incident between the two warring parties. Because TA banned him from this weekend’s Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against Kazakhstan, Tomic suddenly had some free space on his schedule. Thus he took a late wild card into the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

The rest is history.

In advance of Tomic’s first-round clash against fellow Aussie John-Patrick Smith on Monday, Tennis Australia wrote an official e-mail regarding the order of play. Instead of calling it the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, the federation wrote “Hall of Shame Tennis Championships,” followed by the listing of Tomic vs. Smith.

Tennis Australia soon apologized for the Hall of Shame “mistake” and included a ridiculous excuse that a staff member had been confused by the Sharm El Sheikh event in Egypt.

In the latest twist, the Tomic family is threatening to sue Tennis Australia for the “Hall of Shame” comment.

While nothing can be worse than TA’s excuse, Tomic’s play was also less than stellar on Monday. He ended up falling to Smith 6-3, 7-5 while losing 15 of 23 second-serve points. Smith is ranked 156th in the world and had never previously won a match at the ATP level.
