Global Chick’s Weekly Watch – Wait… you mean tennis is still happening? Yes!

It is time to start casting our peepers over the Atlantic, although some areas in Europe are not quite ready to relinquish their hold on us. But for us the big question is – will Queen of Wimbledon, and quite the dancer at the ball Serena Williams be at Bastad? Read on!

WTA Bastad – Collector Swedish Open

Let’s face it – Williams has nothing to prove now – she has owned hard courts, clay courts AND grass, and now we will see her take the challenge of going to clay and then the hard courts – but she has won this before (2013) and actually, the field also throws a former French Open finalist Sam Stosur in as the second seed.

Given that Serena will open against a qualifier, she should get a good late start to get over all the Wimbledon hubbub although she has also committed her time to the Washington Kastles for World Team Tennis the week after, but that will at least close time on this part of the European swing.

Defending champion Mona Barthel comes in as the fourth seed here and the always entertaining Barbora Strycova is third seed. We love this girl – I had a chance to chat to her in Madrid one-to-one where was candid both about her previous record on clay, and how she manages her emotions – she is a great character and it would be great to see her have some success as she had a bit of an up and down run over clay and grass and could do with some consistent results.

WTA Bucharest – Bucharest Open

Last year, this new tournament basked in the success of its latest star Simona Halep, who had made her first Grand Slam final at the French Open, before perhaps an earlier than expected exit at last year’s Wimbledon. Halep has been a bit of an enigma to us. Last year she seemed still a little uncomfortable with her breakthrough of six titles in one year, and apparently we still made her nervous!

This year she has said all the right words – how she never wants to not be fighting for every point after her loss at last year’s US Open, and she did a great job of battling to the Indian Wells title, but since coming back to Europe her results have been a bit up and down. Wimbledon and Roland Garros were big downs with a first and second round defeat.

She will not be contesting her title, and we hope that she can get herself back together because she is an amazing scrapper and the top of the tour needs the more fearless players to challenge at the top.

Top seed honours here go to former doubles pals Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci who are back on familiar ground on the clay and he unique slicey dicey stylings of Monica Niculescu joins the throng as the third seed.

ATP Newport – Hall of Fame Tennis Championships

What’s this? Grass? In the US? Heaven-forfend! There is a great field for this ATP 250, with big-servers as far as you can shake a stick at. Top seed John Isner is set for a final clash with second seed Ivo Karlovic but what catches our eye, in Davis Cup week is wildcard third seed Bernard Tomic, who kicks off against compatriot John Patrick Smith. Fourth seed is Jack Sock who has a chance now to build up some traction.
