Federer, Murray into Wimbledon quarterfinals, Djokovic going to a fifth
By Ricky Dimon
During a manic Monday at Wimbledon featuring plenty of high-quality tennis, controversy, and drama, Roger Federer enjoyed a remarkably routine day at the office. Federer cruised through his fourth-round match against Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to earn a place in his 13th quarterfinal at the All-England Club.
The 33-year-old Swiss did not face a single break point while advancing in a mere one hour and 25 minutes. This was his third match of the fortnight in which his opponent failed to earn a break chance. Federer still has not been broken, as second-round adversary Sam Querrey was unable to capitalize on two opportunities.
“It was a good match,” the world No. 2 assured. “I got off to a good start and kept rolling. Maybe Roberto wasn’t at his very best. Midway through the second he hurt himself. Still, he was out there and he was actually still moving okay, so I had to put him away, which I was able to do.”
Andy Murray managed to put Ivo Karlovic away, as well, but not without some difficulty. The 2013 Wimbledon champion dropped serve for the first time all afternoon at 5-6 in the third set after taking the first two. Nonetheless, Murray recovered for a service break at 3-3 in the fourth that propelled him to a 7-6(7), 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory.
“I just tried to use some variety throughout the match, to not allow him to be too comfortable,” the Scot explained. “It worked at a few important moments. I went for a high percentage of first serves. When I was in the rallies, I felt comfortable. It’s a tactical match, but it’s tough. It’s quite stressful to play against him.”
Speaking of stress, Novak Djokovic will have to sleep on his fourth-round showdown against Kevin Anderson. Playing on Court 1 without a roof, Djokovic and Anderson split four sets at two apiece and play was promptly suspended as darkness loomed. Anderson had seized the first two frames by identical 7-6(8) scorelines before Djokovic answered 6-1, 6-4.
A five-setter that was completed saw Vasek Pospisil recover from from two sets to love down to stun Viktor Troicki. Pospisil, Federer, and Murray are joined in the last eight by Gilles Simon, Stan Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet, and Marin Cilic.
