Bencic shines in the Eastbourne sun
There must be something in the water in Switzerland. These Swiss seem to have a knack on playing on the green stuff, which is strange as Bencic admitted to us on Friday that they don’t actually have grass courts there.
But love them she does, as she followed up her run to the ‘s-Hertogenbosch final by taking former champion Agnieszka Radwanska to three sets, running away with it at the end 6-4 4-6 6-0.
While seagulls were doing less of the dive-bombing this time, they were certainly making their presence felt, wailing like a mangled cat half the time. But that did not put off a nervy affair in the first set as the pair set about playing chess on court. It was Bencic who was rewarded with the first break, only to hand it straight back, before breaking again and holding on to the advantage to serve out the first set.
Ah but Radwanska is nothing if not inventive as she started to craft a lot more of those famous angles, brandishing her racquet about and all but chanting ‘Expelliarmus’ as she started to weave some of the magic we all know she is capable of.
Even when Bencic snuck a break back, Radwanska looked the sharper of the two, although heaven help us, some of those sideways cutting volleys of hers had us holding our breath. She broke the teen to level the match but as we settled ourselves in for more of the same – there was another twist to come.
Bencic could well have panicked and skittered off like a frightened little mountain goat (they have those in Switzerland, right?) but instead she broke Radwanska in the first game of the decider, and decided to do it again before the first sit-down.
She was holding on to her serves more than capably which was adding insult to injury, but that’s ok – let’s just see how she does serving out for the title.
Oh well as it turned out, she was going to handle that just fine, thank you very much, serving out to love to clinch her maiden WTA Singles title, and a Premier no less.
Her resolve was solid, as she described after the match: “I was very focused and really I played very free. Of course I was disappointed I didn’t close out the second set. I was also starting to get tired. It was a lot of running and, yeah, long rallies. But then I started very focused. I did the 3‑0, so after that I relaxed a little bit and could close it out very good. I think I will just realise maybe when going to bed or maybe tomorrow.”
Come on now… are there really no grass courts in Switzerland?
“There is nothing. No grass courts there. Just artificial grass. We don’t have a single one. Just where the cows are (smiling).”
Radwanska was no doubt disappointed on a day when the swirling winds did their best to confound her, as she ruefully admitted: “It was just hard to do anything. I was really struggling with that. Just the ball didn’t listen to me at all (smiling).”
But as the sun goes down and the seagulls find themselves devoid of ice-cream to steal… we will be back live and unplugged from Wimbledon.
