Federer, Murray, Nadal in same quarter as Wimbledon draw is just revealed
Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal landed in a tough bottom half of the bracket when the men’s singles draw at Wimbledon was announced on Friday. Murray and Nadal could face each other as early as the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic is in line for an intriguing opener against Philipp Kohlschreiber. Also in the top half the possibility of a third-round showdown between Milos Raonic and Nick Kyrgios.
In Djokovic’s quarter, Lleyton Hewitt and Jarkko Nieminen are both contesting their last-ever Wimbledon and the two veterans are meeting in the first round. The winner will likely run into Djokovic two days later. A potential third-round adversary for the world No. 1 is Bernard Tomic, who opens with Jan-Lennard Struff.
If things progress according to seed, Djokovic would play Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals. Nishikori, though, appears to have some injury question marks (what’s new?), so the door could be opener for big hitters such as Marin Cilic and John Isner.
In what is generally considered to be a relatively wide-open section (Stan Wawrinka is the top seed at No. 4), the Raonic-Kyrgios winner should have a decent shot at reaching the semis. In addition to those two plus Wawrinka, contenders include Grigor Dimitrov, David Goffin, Richard Gasquet, and Fernando Verdasco.
The bottom half is where the action could get especially wild. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s 16th of the draw is particularly brutal, as the Frenchman is slated to begin his campaign against Gilles Muller before possibly facing current Nottingham semifinalist Denis Istomin in round two and Ivo Karlovic in the last 16. Even after all of that, Tsonga may still have to get past Murray in the fourth round and Nadal in the quarters just to reach the final weekend.
Nadal’s fortnight will start with Thomaz Bellucci and it will only get tougher from there. Assuming the Spaniard advances, one of two grass-court gurus will await on Thursday–either Dustin Brown or Yen-Hsun Lu. Nadal vs. David Ferrer is a potential quarterfinal clash.
Federer’s path at the very bottom of the bracket is no cakewalk. Following an opener with Damir Dzumhur, the 33-year-old Swiss may be on course to face two big-hitting Americans. Current Nottingham semifinalist Sam Querrey is a possible second-round foe and Federer’s nearest seed is an in-form Jack Sock.
Federer vs. Tomas Berdych would be the last quarterfinal if no upsets take place, but Berdych may first have to defeat Jeremy Chardy (round one) and fellow Czech Lukas Rosol (round three).
