The relationship between Bernard Tomic and Tennis Australia has been fragile for much of the 22 year-old’s career and it appears to have broken down again with the current world no.26 turning his back on the nation’s Davis Cup team that plays Kazakhstan in three week’s time.
Once again the root of the problem appears to be Tomic’s father and the lack of funding for his other tennis playing child, 17 year-old Sara who is currently ranked the world’s 49th best female junior.
As a result, Tomic has declared his unavailability for the World Group quarterfinal to be played in Darwin and instead used social media to declare his intention to play the concluding grass court tournament of the year, the Hall of Fame Championships at Newport, Rhode Island that runs July 11 thru 19.
Tomic has asked for a wild card into the ATP World Tour’s 250 series event that clashes with the quarterfinals of Davis Cup following his father this week contacting Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper to complain about Pat Rafter’s influence as Tennis Australia’s director of performance.
Last week Sara won her first professional title at a $10,000 International Tennis Federation event in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt but according to Tomic sr. she still receives minimal assistance from Tennis Australia.
Tomic sr complained to the Herald Sun: “We have zero support from TA for Sara. Pat Rafter is giving (support) to players which he likes. He making his own rules just like ones before him.
“Sara will be now around 630 in world. She has moved up 900 spots in four or five months. We have no help.”
In addition Tomic sr added claims his son, regardless of a much improved relationship with Australia’s next Davis Cup captain-in-waiting Lleyton Hewitt was being pushed out of Davis Cup by “people within TA.”
Australia’s temporary captain Wally Masur is obligated to name his team to face Kazakhstan in the grass court staged tie at the Marrara Sporting Complex during the upcoming Wimbledon tournament and now seems likely to name a quartet of Nick Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Hewitt and Sam Groth.
However Tomic will be a huge loss to the team after he won both his singles rubbers in straight sets during the first round win against the Czech Republic on Ostrava’s indoor clay in March.
