Up The Ladders– Global Chicks Rankings Review & Recap 15 June
The week after a Slam is always pretty peaceful, the sound of birds flying through the summer breeze, the gentle clinking of glasses as Pimms is enjoyed on the patio… the scampering of feet as the rainclouds gather!
But not so for one intrepid hero of the big leagues as the deposed (for now) King of Clay Rafael Nadal graced the grass (easy for you to say) of Stuttgart. It must have been confusing for many. Once a clay court event, it is now part of the extended grass court season, and they got quite the coup with Nadal desperate to cling on to his place in the Top 10.

With the big names resting before the hustle and bustle of Queen’s Club and Halle, the way was clear for Nadal to try and get some confidence back into his game, as he saw in Stuttgart’s new era as a grass court tournament.
It turned out to be a good move for the Spaniard as he snared his second title of the season but set a marker for all those who have been writing him off since his lacklustre (by his exceptional standards) season this year, picking up his first grass court title since he won Wimbledon in 2010.
“It’s a very special title,” he said after his 7-6(3) 6-3 win over Viktor Troicki. “Since 2011 I didn’t play a final on grass, so win a title here is very good news for my game and for my mentality too. Congrats to Viktor for a great tournament. He’s playing great and will have some positives for the week.
“At this point of the season, every victory is important and every title means a lot to me. I’m happy for that.”
He has opted to head to Queen’s where he is the fifth seed.

Last week was a quiet week as far as the big names were concerned, despite a spirited attempt from Agnieszka Radwanska to harness her inner Katniss Everdeen in bow-and-arrow country as she headed up the field in Nottingham. It was all going so swimmingly as well as she made her way through to the semi-finals.
Alas there she came spectacularly unstuck to the unique forehand of Monica Niculescu, although she in turn was upstaged by the 17-year-old Ana Konjuh had to come back from two matches in one day to win her first title as the day’s play was pushed to Monday. It spelled a staggering 32 place jump for the teen, who was unable to claim the rather large bottle of champagne that went with the newly named Elena Baltacha trophy to ring in the new position of Nottingham in the WTA Tour Calendar.
There is plenty of star quality on show next week and the week after, as the WTA Tour hits the final two week window with two premier events back to back in Birmingham and then Eastbourne.
