TEENAGER SWAN SET TO FACE PIRONKOVA IN FIRST ROUND
British teenager Katie Swan will face former Wimbledon semi-finalist Tsvetana Pironkova in the first round of the Aegon Classic Birmingham in what will be the 16-year-old’s first ever WTA Tour match.
Swan, from Bristol, is one of the country’s most promising young players and was runner-up at the Australian Open junior tournament in January. She was one of three British players – along with Naomi Broady and Johanna Konta – granted a wildcard into the main draw of the WTA Premier event at Edgbaston Priory Club. The tournament runs 15th – 21st June.
When the draw was made on Saturday, Konta was pitted against experienced Australian Jarmila Gajdosova and was drawn against Aija Tomjanovic in the first round. British No.1 Heather Watson, who is playing her first grass court tournament of the season, entered the tournament on her world ranking of 45 and will take on a qualifier in round one.
The tournament’s top eight seeds all benefit from a bye into the second round, with top seed Simone Halep awaiting the winner of Broady’s match against Tomjanovic. Sixth seed Karolina Pliskova will take on the victor of Konta’s match against Gajdosova.
The other big names taking part include Ana Ivanovic, the defending Aegon Classic Birmingham champion
Main draw play begins on Monday at Edgbaston Priory Club, with the two qualifying rounds played over this weekend. Play was disrupted by rain on Saturday but six matches were completed and Saisai Zheng, Nicole Gibbs, Aleksandra Krunic, Klara Koukalova, Irina Falconi and Michelle Larcher De Brito all scored first round qualifying wins.
The weather forecast is better for Sunday and suggests a sunny and dry week in Birmingham from Monday through to the final weekend.
