A quick Thursday recap and what not to miss on Friday at The Ojai!

THURSDAY’S PAC-12 QUARTERFINAL RESULTS: No. 4 Cal-Berkeley defeated No. 5 University of Oregon, 4-3, in the first match.

  • Highlight: It was a dramatic finish for Cal in a contest against Oregon as four singles matches went to three sets with four seven-point tiebreakers. The Ducks picked up the doubles point despite a victory on court No. 1 for the Golden Bears. Cal came back to win four singles matches, including an emotional three-set match between Cal’s Gregory Bayane and Oregon’s Simon Stevens that was the deciding match.

In the day’s second quarterfinal match No. 3, UCLA downed No. 6 University of Washington, 4-0.

  • Highlight: UCLA’s Mackenzie McDonald, Dennis Mkrtchian and Martin Redlicki each earned singles points while the Bruins’ doubles tandems of Joe DiGiulio-Karue Sell and Mkrtchian and Austin Rapp secured the match’s decisive point.

PAC-12 RIVALRY DAY IN SEMIS TODAY AT THE OJAI: Starting at noon, No. 1 seed Stanford University takes on No. 4 Cal. At 3 p.m., No. 3 UCLA meets No. 2 USC. For the complete draw click here.

UCLA has a hot date with crosstown rival USC in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Conference men’s team championships for the first time since The Ojai began hosting the event in 2012. UCLA-USC has been the Pac-12 final the past three years, with USC winning in 2012 before UCLA claimed it the past two years. If UCLA’s men’s tennis team is to accomplish a three-peat of the Pac-12 Conference team title, it will have to go through defending NCAA champion USC, which has won five of the past six NCAA Division I team championships. Expect the Libbey Park stands to be standing room only for the 3 p.m. match.

PAC-12 WOMEN AT OJAI VALLEY ATHLETIC CLUB: Defending Pac-12 women’s singles champion and UCLA sophomore Jen Brady escaped the first day of play with a three-set win over Arizona’s Lauren Marker. Marker won the first set but Brady was able to come back, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the event taking place at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. Top-seeded USC’s Giuliana Olmos and No. 2 Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA both advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals with straight-set wins. For women’s Pac-12 Championship draw, click here.

California Community Colleges Division: Top-seeded Seppi Capaul of American River opened up play in the 128 singles draw with a win on the men’s side, as did No. 2 Hironori Koyanagi of Ventura College. Click for draws here. On the women’s side, Chieko Yamada of Shasta blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Draws here.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S OPEN AT OJAI VALLEY INN: The Men’s Open Division began play at The Ojai on Thursday with top-seeded Philip Bester of Canada winning easily in straight sets, giving up just three games. Bester next takes on USC player Robbie Bellamy Friday at 9:30 a.m. Six-time Ojai Open singles finalist Lester Cook is the No. 5 seed and did even better, losing just one game in his second-round match. Women’s Open Singles division plays begins on Friday with top-seeded Emma Higuchi of Los Angeles taking on Allie Sanford of Phoenix in the first round at the Ojai Valley Inn at 8 a.m. For the Women’s Open Singles draw, click here.

Boys’ CIF Divisions: Top-seeded Harvard-Westlake senior Michael Genender cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Leo Hibi of Woodbridge. Most second-round matches, including Genender’s, were postponed until Friday morning due to rain. Genender, committed to attend and play tennis at Stanford, lost last year’s CIF final to current UCLA freshman Austin Rapp in three sets – his only high school defeat last year – before avenging that defeat against current to Rapp in the 2014 CIF-Southern Section Individual final. For Boys’ CIF draws, click here.

Men’s Division III West Regional: Singles and doubles action in the Men’s Division III West division begins today, as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps holds two of the top three seeds in each draw. Claremont’s Warren Wood is a top seed in both draws, and Skyler Butts of CMS is a No. 3 seed in each draw. University of Redlands’ Patrick Lipscomb is the No. 2 seed in both draws. For the Men’s Division III West draws, click here.

Independent Colleges: Westmont College’s Lauren Stratman, top-seeded in the Women’s Independent Colleges Singles Division and second-seeded in the Women’s Independent Colleges Doubles draw with Ines Costamagna, advanced to the third round in each draw. Stratman ousted Lucile Pothier of Abilene Christian, 6-1, 6-4, and teamed with Costamagna to defeat Janae Chinn and Andrea Madrigal of La Verne, 6-3, 6-0, in a pair of second round matches.
