The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has today announced that the upcoming Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarter-final between Great Britain and France will take place on grass at The Queen’s Club in West London.
The tie will take place from 17-19 July 2015, and will be the 21st meeting between the two nations. This is Great Britain’s second successive year in the World Group quarter-finals after the team defeated the USA in the first round, whilst last year’s finalists France earned their place after defeating Germany. This is the first time Great Britain will meet France since 1992, with the winners of the tie set to face either Australia or Kazakhstan in the semi-finals.
Leon Smith, Captain of the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team, said: “Queen’s Club will be a unique and special venue for this quarter-final tie against a very strong French team. Our British team have all had very good results as individuals at Queen’s Club, in particular Andy Murray having won the event on three occasions. The grass courts at Queen’s are some of the best in the world and our team will look to use the courts and the passionate home crowd to full advantage. The atmosphere and crowd support will be vital.”
World number 3 Andy Murray added: “Queen’s will be a perfect venue for our quarter-final match against France. I’ve been playing at Queen’s for ten years now so I feel very at home there as do the rest of the British team, so it’s a great choice. Fingers crossed it’s a memorable summer for British tennis.”
James Ward, who clinched an unforgettable victory over current world number 19 John Isner in round one winning 15-13 in the final set, added: “We all think that Queen’s is a great choice for Davis Cup. Andy has won the tournament three times, I got to the semi-finals a few years ago and the doubles guys have done well there too so it feels very natural for us to want to play Davis Cup at a venue where we all feel very comfortable. The grass courts are without doubt some of the best in the country and the fact that it happens to be in my home town makes it that extra bit special.”
The final day of the Davis Cup tie will take place exactly four weeks after the final of the Aegon Championships, with both events expected to welcome capacity crowds of 7,000 during each day of competition. This will be the first time since 1990 that The Queen’s Club has hosted Davis Cup action, when Great Britain then took on France in a World Group Play-Off.
Tim Cockroft, Chairman of The Queen’s Club added: “It is an honour for the Club to be invited to host what should be an enthralling Davis Cup quarter-final on our grass courts as the GB team bids to reach its first semi-final for 34 years.”
David Macmillan, Chief Marketing Officer at Aegon UK said: “The Queen’s Club is truly a world class venue and it’s great that once again, home fans will be able to see their team in action. The Aegon GB Davis Cup Team showed just how much it means to play for their country in Glasgow and they’ll be looking to build on their fantastic win over the USA in the next round.”
