NOVAK DJOKOVIC WINS LAUREUS WORLD SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD

Novak Djokovic has been named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year at a ceremony on Wednesday in Shanghai, China.

The World No. 1, who is competing at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters this week, was presented with the award by HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco at the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club.

Djokovic came out on top ahead of fellow nominees Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese and Real Madrid footballer, and Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy.

“This is probably the crown of my 2014 season that has been highlighted with winning Wimbledon, regaining No. 1 in the world and becoming a father,” said Djokovic. “It has probably been my best year so far in my life.”

In 2014, the Serbian compiled a 61-8 match record, won Wimbledon (d. Federer), five ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophies and the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for a third straight year. He reclaimed No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on 7 July.

Djokovic had previously won the award in 2012 after a remarkable 2011 campaign, which saw him win three Grand Slam championships and five ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles.
