Mauresmo, ANDY Murray’s Coach, Is Pregnant
Andy Murray’s plans to reprise his 2012 US Open victory and historic success at Wimbledon the following year seem to have been thrown into disarray with the news his coach of less than a year, Amelie Mauresmo is pregnant.
The 35 year-old Frenchwoman used Twitter to release the news that she is expecting her first baby in August, which comes soon after Wimbledon (June 29 thru July 12) and soon before or just at the start of the US Open (August 31 thru September 13).
However it seems unlikely that although Mauresmo waited until just a matter of hours before Murray’s wedding day to announce her impending arrival, the world no.3 would have been unaware of her condition having just spent the best part of a month in her close company at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
Given the announced birthdate, Mauresmo is now five months into her pregnancy and therefore the recent appointment of 43 year-old Swede Jonas Bjorkman as co-coach, seems all the more pertinent. And any awareness of the impending confinement did not have any effect on Murray’s form as he did have a good run in the United States spring double, reaching the semi-final in Indian Wells and the final in Miami.
Mauresmo is not expected at Dunblane Cathedral tomorrow for Murray’s wedding to long-time girlfriend Kim Sears as she will be fulfilling her duties as French Fed Cup captain before next weekend’s World Group semi-final in the Czech city of Ostrava.
However yesterday she tweeted: “Baby will be here in August ! #pregnant So happy.” The tweet was accompanied by a photograph of two pairs of blue sneakers, one to fit an adult and another for an infant.
No more details are yet available except that a representative of Murray’s management company 77 confirmed the Scot’s camp are aware of the news.
Since splitting up with former partner Sylvie Bourdon, a St Tropez restaurateur more than ten years ago, Mauresmo has been painstakingly discreet about her relationships and no female company has ever been spotted anywhere close to Team Murray.
Therefore both her current relationship details and the identity of the father remain a complete mystery to both French and British media.
But Murray recently defended his appointment of Mauresmo as a seemingly long-term replacement for Ivan Lendl, saying: ‘She was someone who struggled with nerves and conquered them later in her career. Someone like that can help more than someone who hasn’t had those issues before.
“You can talk about Amelie’s accomplishments, she won a lot. She was No 1 in the world, she won multiple Grand Slams, she had a creative game style. As a person, she is very nice, very easy to communicate with, but she is firm as well. So those are the reasons I wanted to give it a shot.”
Murray is due to link up with Bjorkman for the first time next week in Barcelona for a concerted training block before he makes his first competitive outing of the year on European clay at Munich’s BMW Open, starting April 27.
