Andy Murray needs one more win to join the exclusive club of players to have registered 500 wins on the ATP World Tour and he has set his sights on the round of 16 match at the Miami Open against the Florida-based South African Kevin Anderson.
Should he beat Anderson, Murray will join eight other current players in the 500 club; Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Lleyton Hewitt, Tommy Haas, Tommy Robredo and Tomas Berdych who scored his crucial win just a month ago in Dubai. Only Djokovic is younger than the Scot who will turn 28 years of age in six weeks’ time.
“It’s nice, because when you see the list of the players that have won that many matches; there isn’t loads,” said Murray who so far this year has added 18 wins to his total. “I obviously want to try and win more, and hopefully still have quite a few years ahead of me left to add to that number.
The record books show there have only been 45 players to amass 500 tour wins since the Open era began in 1968 and Murray still has some way to go to overtake all-time leader Jimmy Connors with 1,253.
Connors is followed by Murray’s former coach Ivan Lendl (1,071) and Roger Federer(1,012). Of the retired players in the list who stand to be overtaken there is the late Vitas Gerulaitis (515), Wayne Ferreira (512) and current United States Davis Cup captain Jim Courier (506).
“It’s not easy to win that many matches these days, so that’s a good sign,” observed Murray who moved to 499 with a 6-3,6-4 win over Colombian Santiago Giraldo.
