After missing almost all of 2014 due to left-wrist surgery, Juan Martin Del Potro appeared to be ready for a full slate of action this year when he returned in Sydney. Despite an encouraging quarterfinal performance, the Argentine suffered another setback and was promptly sidelined by an additional procedure–albeit a more minor one–on his wrist.
Now, two months later, he is back again.
Del Potro is making his latest comeback at the Miami Open, a place where is perhaps loved to greater extent than anywhere else outside of Argentina. He will contest a blockbuster first-round match on Thursday afternoon against Vasek Pospisil.
It will be the first-ever meeting between two players who are among the most likeable on tour. Pospisil has been on fire in doubles since last summer, with titles at Wimbledon and last week in Indian Wells–just to name a few. Singles, however, has been slower going for the 60th-ranked Canadian. He has been solid but unspectacular in 2015, with an even record of 7-7.
“I focus only on entering the court to play my first match,” Del Potro explained. “I do not care about the result yet, but to leave the court fully well physically.
“I think being here in this tournament energizes me again. At times I feel a bit far in the rankings. I know I have a long way to go. When I was No. 4 in the world, everything was much easier. Even the objectives that I had were different. But that’s life. Those are things that happen to athletes, and this is something that I had to deal with and I am just very happy to play tennis again.”
